Use of Online Resources by Librarians in Public Sector University Libraries of Jamshoro Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract

This scholarly research aims to examine and evaluate the utilization of online resources and services by the librarians in public sector university libraries of Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. The study also focuses on the problems faced by librarians using online resources and services. The study is based on the survey method. Four (4) public-sector university libraries in Jamshoro have been taken in this study. The study is based on the survey method, to collect the data hundred (100) questionnaires were distributed among the university Librarians and 75 were returned. The response rate was 75% and (n=75). The response to the statement is the most common online resource used by librarians. It was revealed that E-mail is the most common online source used by librarians. E-books are the second most online resources used by Librarians, Data further revealed that E-conferencing, E-shopping, E-magazine-encyclopedia-dictionaries, and search engines etcetera are also used as other online resources. It was also revealed from the response that online journals, e-books, and CD ROMs are the most common online services provided to users by librarians. Data also showed online services including electronic documentary delivery service, to assist staff and students in using subject-based information gateway is also provided to the users. Data revealed that Librarians also provide enough printers /scanner services to library users in uploading and retrieving information on the web, and webinars, libraries also provide online courses and online workshops. Data also revealed that librarians provide training on how to use HEC Digital Library. The data showed that internet speed, awareness of the benefits of the internet to staff, and the unavailability of support for maintaining internet are is most common problems faced by the librarians. It also revealed that inadequate hardware support and power outrage hurt providing overall performance of the online services. The study will[1] be beneficial for the policymakers in libraries to improve the online services and access to online resources and improve service delivery to the library users, as well as improve librarians' skills in providing library services.
